And by this time in history the term "Romanticism" has such a wealth of references as to make it somewhat ambiguous. The three recent American compositions in this collection are all "romantic" in more than one sense, yet they are not so in all the same ways. As part of the process of bridging nineteenth-century and late twentieth-century Romantic styles, they also build bridges between the concerto and the symphonic forms, between harmonies and instruments used in classical and jazz-centered ways. Here too is the "romantic" excitement of contrasts: between orchestra and soloist functioning sometimes as partners or sometimes as adversaries, and between free flexibility of solo lines and strictly metered orchestra writing. - Leslie Kandell |
