Description
Excerpts from the Liner Notes (by Marvin Rosen)

The brief song cycle “Emptiness Became Music” was begun in 1986 and features texts by the composer who refers to this work as “a retrospective of love from a mature point of view.” The work is in two versions. The first, a chamber music version, heard on this recording was followed by a publication for voice, piano and flute. All together, the cycle contains four songs.

The cello sonata, “Sapphire Summer,” was written in 1995 for the composer's daughter Beverly who is a pianist and cellist David Vanderkooi. Unfortunately, the performance that was to happen never did due to Beverly's Carpal tunnel syndrome. The work was eventually premiered in 1996 at Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama, with cellist, Spencer Brewer, and the composer at the piano.

The brief song cycle “Eternity,” completed in 1996, began its life when the composer received a commission from a male choral group for two small pieces. Shaffer always liked the poetry of William Blake and decided to set both “Infant Joy” and “Infant Sorrow.”

The elegy for Princess Diana, “She Heard a Song,” was written after the death of Diana Princess of Wales.

The song cycle, “On Gardens, Minutes and Butterflies,” written after the movie about Bob Fosse's life titled “All that Jazz,” features words by the composer and is about the various stages of love and life.

The song cycle, “Christina Rossetti, My Mother and Me,” was written in memory of the composer's mother who died in 1994. Originally to be a chamber work, it became a cycle after Shaffer discovered the poems of Christina Rossetti.

The chamber work, “Woman with a Parasol,” was inspired by the Claude Monet painting of the same name.

The original version of “Juniper Shoes” was written for the retirement celebration of Father Albert Newton in 1995 and was commissioned by All Saints' Episcopal Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
