MMC Recordings is pleased to present A Prague Spring, the first full length release from American composer Peter Homans.
With 2008 marking the 40th anniversary of the historic Prague Spring event, the piece heard here of the same name - written for flute and orchestra- was Homans’ way of “describing the emergence of hope” which was “dashed in '68, and then finally realized in 1989's ‘Velvet Revolution’.” Appropriately, the piece was recorded with the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra and features Cathrine Saunders on solo flute.
Citing the work of Stravinsky as major influence, Homans noted that he wrote his “Plie De Trois” with choreography and human movement in mind.
Similarly, much Homans’ choral work relies on the happy union of opposing forces, as heard here on “4 Choruses.” The Boston-based composer calls the voice “the most human of instruments,” and one that he combines here as guided by the Silesian Radio Orchestra with the subtle interweaving of rhythm and rhyme.
“Quintino”, a piece for flute, clarinet, piano, viola, and cello, was performed by Dinosaur Annex, a Boston-based ensemble committed to bringing the works of living composers to the public.
In his musical career, Homans has written and recorded numerous pieces for chamber ensembles and orchestras and has been awarded two Fellowships at Tanglewood, winning the first-ever Aaron Copland Prize for Composition. He later worked under Leonard Bernstein as his Asst. Business Manager and principal Musical Assistant.
