| | | | | | American Journeys - Karen Dreyfus | | | Our Price: $9.95 | | | | Item Number: MMC2149 | | | | Description | | MMC’s KAREN DREYFUS AMERICAN JOURNEYS is the latest release to feature the world-renowned violist performing the finest in modern American music. McKinley’s "Concert Variations" (featuring Glenn Dicterow, violin) is yet another tour-de-force from the prolific Boston-based composer, an audacious exercise in stretching his signature melodic and harmonic materials to their limits in a deeply unconventional manner. Helen Stanley’s "Concerto Romantico" is, in the words of the composer, a trip through "the conflicting elements of the psyche," and into the realm of the sublimely musical. The late Newton Strandberg’s "Concerto For Viola & Orchestra" is a delightful mix of somber and whimsical themes featuring a demanding cadenza that (according to the soloist) touches on all styles of playing, from arpeggios, tremelandos, to chordal harmonies. "Excursions," by the esteemed Al Hoose, is a stunning showcase for the dark beauty of Dreyfus’ viola tone.
Featuring the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra (Carl St. Clair, conductor), Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra (Vladimir Valek, conductor), and the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra (Jerzy Swoboda).
Violist Karen Dreyfus has distinguished herself as a recipient of many prizes, both in this country and abroad, including the Naumburg Viola Competition (1982), the Lionel Tertis Competition (1980), the Washington International Competition (1979), and a National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Award. She has performed in recital with Yehudi Menuhin at Carnegie Hall and has also collaborated with such artists as Rudolf Serkin, Alexander Schneider, Leon Fleisher, Chick Corea, and her husband, Glenn Dicterow. Ms. Dreyfus has also served on the faculties of the Third Street Music School Settlement, SUNY Purchase, and Queens College, and is a cofounding member of the Lyric Piano Quartet, which is quartet in residence at Queens College. American Record Guide cites Ms. Dreyfus as "a terrific player with impeccable technique and intonation, beautiful tone, and real musicianship," and BBC Magazine hails Dreyfus for her ability to "marry the old-fashioned virtues of portamento and warm vibrato to a quicksilver intelligence." |
