Carl St. Clair

Carl St.Clair, an internationally recognized American conductor, is in his 12th season as Music Director of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. St.Clair has brought the Pacific Symphony to national attention and to new heights of artistic excellence and growth with his numerous artistic initiatives, commissions of new works, recording projects, world premieres and innovative educational programs. Over the past decade, he has exposed audiences to an eclectic mix of respected classics as well as new works by contemporary composers, developing patron appreciation for a wide range of symphonic music.

A native of Texas, St. Clair is indebted to his musical mentors Kurt Masur and Leonard Bernstein. In August 1990 he shared a concert with Bernstein at the Koussevitsky memorial concert, ultimately Bernstein’s last public performance, conducting Bernstein’s Arias and Barcarolles. Committed to music education, St. Clair has served on five different university faculties including the University of Southern California, where he also serves as a mentor and visiting artist.

Dividing his time between America and Europe, St.Clair is a guest conductor for orchestras throughout the world. In North America, St.Clair has performed with the Boston Symphony (for which he served as Assistant Conductor from 1986 to 1990), New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and San Francisco Symphony. In Europe, he is the Principal Guest Conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphonie Orchestra, where he performed Philip Glass’ Symphony No.5 in its German Premiere at the Ludwigsberg Festival last summer. Other summer festival appearances include the Bamberger Sinfoniker, Pablo Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, International Orgelfest in Nürnberg, Texas Music Festival, and Indiana University Summer Festival.

In 1990, St.Clair received the NEA/Seaver Conductors Award - the most prestigious such prize in the nation.
