| | | ROBERT BLACK (1950-1993)
Born in Dallas, Texas, the late Robert Black was a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory and the Juilliard School, where he earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree. He began piano studies at age five and presented his first public recitals at age thirteen. His experience, musicianship, and guidance was integral to the early successes of the MMC recording series.
Among the many prestigious positions that Mr. Black attained as a conductor were Principal Conductor of the Kuopio Orchestra in Finland, and Music Director of the PRISM Chamber Orchestra in New York, the New Amsterdam Symphony, and the American Opera Projects. He made numerous guest appearances with orchestras, both national and international, as a featured conductor.
Robert Black’s festival appearances included the New York Philharmonic’s Horizons Festival, the Warsaw Autumn Festival, World Music Days in Athens, Greece, New York’s Bang-On-A-Can Festival, the Grand Teton Festival, and the LSU Contemporary Music Festival.
The Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra gave its inaugural concert on November 5, 1901. In 1939, at the start of World War II, their concert hall was bombed and only 32 members of the orchestra survived the war. The concert hall was restored and reopened on February 21, 1955. Regarded as Poland’s finest orchestra, they frequently tour abroad and participate in international festivals. The orchestra has made numerous recordings for broadcast and commercial release. |
