| | | Rolv Yttrehus was born in 1926 in Duluth, Minnesota. He holds degrees from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the University of Michigan. In 1962 he received a Diploma from The Accademia Di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
Yttrehus studied harmony with Nadia Boulanger, and composition with Ross Lee Finney, Roger Sessions, Aaron Copland, and Goffredo Petrassi.
In addition to receiving numerous awards, Yttrehus has been given grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
He has had his music performed at the Fromm Festival in Tanglewood and at the ISCM World Music Days USA. Groups in New York who have performed his work include The Juilliard Ensemble, The Da Capo Chamber Players, The Group for Contemporary Music, Parnassus, and Ensemble 21.
His Plectrum Spectrum received its first performance in January, 2001 by the Cygnus Ensemble at Merkin Hall in New York and his Gradus Ad Parnassum was given its first performance and was recorded (First Edition Records 779) by Peter Leonard and the Louisville Orchestra, with soprano Catherine Rowe. Other performances of his work have taken place in Darmstadt, Germany (1994) and in Augsburg, Germany (1996). In 1998 in Warsaw, Poland Yttrehus’ Symphony Number One (1998) - written with assistance from the McKenzie Family Trust - was performed, then recorded by the Warsaw National Philharmonic. It is the recording found on this CD.
Mr. Yttrehus is now Professor of Music Emeritus, having retired from teaching at Rutgers University in the fall of 1996. While there he taught counterpoint, analysis and orchestration to undergraduates, and composition and other advanced courses to graduates. |
