| | | Newton D. Strandberg was born on January 3, 1921 in River Falls, Wisconsin, but spent his early youth in the state of Iowa. His first years of college were at North Park College in Chicago. He later transferred to the School of Music at Northwestern University where he obtained a Bachelor of Music Education in 1942, a Master of Music in piano in 1947, and a Doctor of Music in Music Composition in 1956.
During World War II, he served as a Chaplain’s Assistant in the United States Navy. The remainder of his life has been involved in teaching or studying in the academic world. From 1947 to 1949 he taught piano at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and from 1950 to 1967 he held tenure at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Since 1967 he has been a member of the Composition-Theory faculty at Sam Houston State University.
Dr. Strandberg’s principal composition teacher was Anthony Donato at Northwestern University. He also studied with the renowned Nadia Boulanger in Fountainebleau, Henry Cowell at Columbia University, and John Becker at Chicago Musical College. |
