Stephen Rush, Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan, is the Music Director for the Dance Department and the Director of the University of Michigan Digital Music Ensemble. He earned his doctorate in Music Composition at the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Samuel Adler, Warren Benson and Gunther Schuller. His music has been performed worldwide, including recent premieres in Hungary, Berlin, Toronto, New York and Costa Rica. Having received grants from Meet the Composer, the American Music Center and the Arts Foundation of Michigan, Rush also received a 1992 grant from the Kellogg Foundation to study Indian Dance and Music in India, where he created a work with Bharata Natyam dancer Navtej Johar.
A member of the American Music Center and the International Guild of Musicians in Dance, Rush has works published by Dorn Publications and the University of Michigan Carillon Press. As a performer, Rush has frequently appeared playing works of modern American composers. He tours with dancer Sandra Torijano-DeYoung performing highly original and socially-conscientious works, with whom he was awarded the Honorifico Mentioné for Work in Dance by the government of Costa Rica. He has presented jazz concerts with his own trio at Lincoln Center, and performed with ex-Coltrane bassist Steve Davis and with Owl Records recording artist Ed Sarath.
Rush’s works, including a recording of his new orchestra piece, Possession, are available on the MMC Recordings label. His chamber work, Rebellion, has also been recorded by members of the New York Philharmonic and is available on CALA Records. |
