Alexandra Pierce
 
Born in Philadelphia on February 21, 1934, prolific composer Alexandra Pierce has written some 175 pieces, including works for symphony orchestra, string quartet, chorus, solo voice, piano, prepared piano, harp, woodwind, percussion, and various chamber ensembles. She has received numerous commissions and awards, including yearly ASCAP Standard Awards since 1979. Her music has been widely performed and recorded, and her works have been published by Seesaw Music Corporation, Music Media Press, Hildegard Music, Arsis (Sisra) Press, and symphonic works are available from Fleischer Collection of Orchestral Music of The Free Library of Philadelphia.

Alexandra Pierce has also authored and co-authored a number of books, including Spanning: Essays on Music Theory, Performance and Movement, Expressive Movement: Posture and Action in Daily Life and the Performing Arts, and Generous Movement, a Practical Guide to Balance in Action (the latter two co-authored with Roger Pierce).

She received her Ph.D. in music theory and composition from Brandeis University, and has held teaching positions at Antioch College, Rocky Mountain College, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a Professor of Music and Movement at the University of Redlands in California, where she heads the composition program, and is also a founding member of Moving Voices, a repertory company that performs music and poetry.
