Daniel Perlongo
 
Daniel James Perlongo (b. 1942) was born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on September 23, 1942. His early music training consisted of private study on accordion, piano, tuba, and double bass in the public school music program. When he was thirteen years old he began working as a commercial and jazz accordionist/pianist. He attended the University of Michigan from 1960 to 1966 where he received B.M. and M.M. degrees, studying with George Balch Wilson, Leslie Bassett and Ross Lee Finney. With a Fulbright-Hayes Fellowship, he continued his studies for two years in Rome at the Academy of St. Cecilia with Gofreddo Petrassi.
Perlongo has received numerous awards, including the Prix de Rome, Guggenheim, American Academy-National Institute of Arts and Letters and National Endowment for the Arts. He has been resident composer at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, Italy, and the Montalvo Center for the Arts in Saratoga, California. Mr. Perlongo teaches Composition, Theory and Jazz Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Recently, his By Verse Distills for mezzo soprano, clarinet, violin and piano, commissioned by the Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association, was chosen for performance at the Memphis St. University Contemporary Music Festival. His Lake Breezes for chamber orchestra and A Day at Xochimilco for piano and wind quintet were performed by the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble.
Mr. Perlongo’s orchestral music, noted for its sensitive lyricism and unique instrumental combinations, earned him recognition early in his career. His Seven Pieces was awarded the Joseph Bearns Prize from Columbia University, and Myriad, the Premio D’Atri from the Academy of St. Cecilia. Myriad and Ephemeron have been performed by the Italian Radio Orchestra (RAI) of Rome. His Variations for small orchestra has been performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Chamber Orchestra and the American Composers Orchestra. His Concertino was winner of the Nebraska Sinfonia Orchestral Competition, and was performed by the Nebraska Sinfonia and the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble.
Daniel Perlongo’s chamber music has been recognized for its finely crafted lyricism and subtle expressiveness. His Aureole for saxophone quartet won the New Music for Young Ensembles competition and was premiered at Carnegie Recital Hall. His String Quartet II, performed by the Pro Arte Quartet, was premiered at Carnegie Recital Hall after winning the League of Composers ISCM competition. His Ricercar for wind trio was winner of the International Double Reed Society competition. The Ricercar and Fragments for flute and cello are recorded on CRI. His Aureole is published by Shawnee Press, and his other works are available from the American Composers Alliance.
