| | | Roman E. Peña was born on September 20, 1920, in Bani, capital of the Peravia province in the Dominican Republic. Mr. Peña felt a strong attraction for music and began to play guitar at an early age. He also studied violin in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, with Professor Willy Kleimberg, Guillermo Jimenez, and Checo Emil Fiedmen. Years later he took courses of harmony with Don Pancho Garcia and Manuel Simo. After playing violin with the National Symphony Orchestra for seventeen years, Mr. Peña retired to dedicate himself to playing classical guitar and to composing.
Together with guitarists Dr. Ramon Guerrero, Dr. Manuel Pichardo Sarda and others, he formed in Santo Domingo the association “Lovers of Guitars Dr. Ramon Guerrero (“Amantes de la Guitarra Dr. Ramon Guerrero”),” which gives classes, and performances on television radio to orient public opinion about the guitar, which is perhaps the most popular instrument in the world. |
