David Niethamer

Appointed Principal Clarinetist of the Richmond Symphony in 1979, David Niethamer has appeared many times as soloist—most recently, premiering Allan Blank’s Concerto for Clarinet and Strings. In addition to his work with orchestra, Niethamer has maintained a busy schedule of chamber music performances, solo recitals, and teaching. He has performed with the Monticello Trio, the Brentano Quartet, the Kandinsky Trio, the Composers Quartet, and the Lenox Quartet, and from 1982 to 1992 he was clarinetist and Artistic Director of the Roxbury Chamber Players. In 1994 he was named Artistic Director of the Richmond Chamber Players.

Niethamer’s commitment to living composers has led to collaborations with Karel Husa, Gunther Schuller, and Ned Rorem (as well as Allan Blank), and he has recorded on the Opus One and Elan labels in addition to MMC. He has taught at Ithaca College, Tennessee Tech, the University of Alabama/Huntsville, Oberlin, and currently at the University of Richmond.
