| | | David Kowalski was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1956. His early musical training consisted largely of private lessons on drums, guitar, flute, and piano. He began composing at the age of twelve, and by fourteen was organizing local musicians to perform his music. Kowalski studied electrical engineering and music at University of Pennsylvania, where he was one of the founding members of the Penn Composers Guild. He studied composition with Donald Martino and Arthur Berger at New England Conservatory of Music, and with Milton Babbitt and Peter Westergaard at Princeton, where he received his Ph. D. His oeuvre is quite large, consisting of over 200 works, including vocal pieces, works for orchestra, chamber music, and music for electronic instruments. He has also published articles on music theory.
Along with his many academic accolades, Kowalski has received awards from the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra, the Brookline Library Music Association, and the American Society of University Composers. His music has been performed by numerous artists and organizations throughout the United States, and he remains active as a composer while working as a data systems analyst. |
