| | | Born in New Jersey into a family of artists and musicians, David Hawthorne, pictured here with his brother Kelvin (left) has followed a dual career as musician and craftsman. He studied violin and began composing as a child, then turned to jazz guitar at the Berklee College of Music. Later he earned Master’s degrees in both jazz and composition from the New England Conservatory, where his teachers included William Thomas McKinley, George Russell, Bob Moses, and Mick Goodrick.
His compositions, which include works for orchestra, for jazz ensembles, and for various chamber groups and duos, have been performed by the New England Conservatory Orchestra, pianist Judith Gordon, and flutist Robert Stallman (in Carnegie Hall). His 1991 String Quartet is recorded on Cavalli Records by the Amalien Quartet Munich.
Hawthorne has also become an accomplished maker of bows for stringed instruments, having studied with master bowmaker William Salchow. His bows are played by such notable virtuosi as Yo-Yo Ma and Kim Kashkashian. He now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he continues to compose, teach, and perform. |
