| | | Michigan native James Caldwell was born in 1957. He studied composition with Charles Ruggiero and David Liptak at Michigan State University, and with Alan Stout and M. William Karlins at Northwestern, where he received his Master of Music and Doctorate. He also studied electronic music at Northwestern with Stephen Syverud.
Caldwell’s music has been widely performed in the United States, and he has received the Padrone/Kantscheidt Award for Musical Composition. He was also a finalist for the ASCAP Foundation Grant for Young Composers, and is the co-director of the annual W.I.U. New Music Festival, which attracts composers from around the United States for performances, lectures, and panels. Currently, James Caldwell is an Associate Professor of Music Theory and Composition at Western Illinois University, where he is also director of the Electronic Music Studio. He was awarded a Faculty Excellence Award in 1990, and has received grants from the Faculty Development Office, the Western Illinois University Foundation, and the University Research Council. |
